Una de las novelas más importantes de Dickens, David Copperfield narra la historia de su personaje en primera persona desde su infancia hasta su madurez.

El centro que desarrolla la historia es la relación de Copperfield con distintos personajes que va conociendo desde su infancia desdichada; a medida que encuentra su "lugar en el mundo", sus avatares van en múltiples guiones paralelos, con mundos de personajes primero aislados pero que luego con mayores entrecruces.

Así, conocemos primero a su madre Clara y su niñera Pegotty; al infaliblemente malvado padrastro Murdstone y su hermana, su tia Betsy Trotwood; su primer amor Emily, sus amigos del internado Steerforth y Traddles, entre tantos otros... Las diferentes historias enganchan en mayor o menor medida; personalmente la que más me gustó fue la trama del maquiavélico discípulo de Mr Wickfield, Uriah Heep. Que personaje más odioso!!

I am glad to recollect that when the carrier's cart wass at the gate, and my mother stood there kissing me, a grateful fondness for her and for the old place I had never turned my back before, made me cry. I am glad to know that my mother cried too, and that I felt her heart beating against mine.

The remembrance of that life is fraught with so much pain to me, with so much mental suffering and want of hope, that I have never had the courage even to examine how long I was doomed to lead it. Wether it lasted for a year, or more, or less, I do not know. I only know that it was, and ceased to be; and that I have written, and there I leave it.

But the agony of mind, the remorse, and shame I felt, when I became conscious next day! My horror of having commited a thousand offences I had forgotten (...) my racking head, the smell of smoke, the sight of glasses, the impossibility of going out, or even getting up! Oh, what a day it was!
